Lancaster Stormers News Release
In every lineup there seems to be that one nemesis.
For the Barnstormers against the Camden Riversharks, it is outfielder Drew Macias.
Macias slammed two home runs on Sunday evening, pacing the Camden Riversharks to a 5-2 victory over Lancaster at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Lancaster remained 1 1/2 games behind York in the Freedom Division. Meanwhile, the Riversharks stayed in a first place tie with the Long Island Ducks on the Liberty side.
Macias snapped a scoreless tie, leading off the third inning with a homer into the front of the right field picnic deck. It was his seventh long ball of the season, his fourth at the expense of Lancaster pitching.
Matt Wright (2-8) ran into his most troublesome inning in the fourth. Ruddy Yan led off with a double, chopped over the head of first baseman Tommy Everidge, who was guarding against a bunt. Noah Hall scored Yan with a ground single up the middle, and Pedro Feliz reached on a bloop single to left. Brandon Jones handled the hardest hit ball of the inning, making a leaping catch against the right field wall to rob Danny Richar of a hit. Hall took third on the play and scored when second baseman Gilberto Mejia briefly fumbled a ground ball by Brian Burgamy, only getting a force at second.
Burgamy made it 4-0 with a one-out homer in the eighth.
The Barnstormers were stymied through the first six innings by control artist Josh Towers. Lancaster managed a first inning double by Mejia before Towers reeled off 11 outs in a row. Matt Tupman and Adam Calderone picked up one-out hits in the sixth, but any rally was thrwarted when Mejia grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Lancaster started to turn the tide in the seventh. Tommy Everidge drove a homer to right, and, one out later, Aaron Herr pounded a double into left center. Brandon Jones screamed a line drive off the right field wall for an RBI single, cutting the lead to 4-2.
Towers, who threw only 13 balls in 6 2/3 innings, was lifted after getting Iggy Suarez to pop to second for the second out in the seventh. Lefty John Bale was summoned to turn Wayne Lydon around to the right side. That move nearly backfired as Lydon roped a double off the top of Feliz' glove at third, putting the tying runs into scoring position. Bale got Tupman to hit a fly ball to right center after a long at bat to close the threat.
Macias made certain the Barnstormers would not come back any further. The Camden right fielder blasted an impressive homer off the back tier of signs in right center against Evan Englebrook with two gone in the top of the inning. Then, with one out and Jones aboard on an infield single, he raced to his left to catch a slicing fly ball by Iggy Suarez and doubled Jones off first to end the game. Jay Marshall was the beneficiary of the play, earning his first save with Camden.
The two clubs meet again on Monday evening at 7:00. Lancaster will start right-hander Cesar Carrillo (2-8) against Camden lefty Eddy Camacho (5-1), a former Barnstormers reliever. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
NOTES: Jones has the longest active hitting streak on the club at six...He has seven hits in the last three games...Wright threw eight innings without allowing a walk...He has thrown 50 innings in his last seven starts with a 3.06 ERA but has only one win in that time...Everidge tied Bridgeport's Wes Bankston for the league home run lead at 18...Lancaster closed July at 14-14.
