Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
York, PA - Blue Crabs starter Eddie Rodriguez went the full nine and the offense erupted for six seventh-inning runs as Southern Maryland defeated York 7-2 on Sunday evening at Sovereign Bank Stadium in front of 3,191 faithful.
The Blue Crabs scored first in the first inning as an RBI single by first baseman Ben Harrison gave Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead. The Revolution would respond in the third, as a wild pitch from Rodriguez and an RBI single from second baseman Ramon Castro gave York their only lead of the game at 2-1.
Things would stay that way until the seventh inning. Until this point, the Blue Crabs had left seven on base with six of them in scoring position. But with the bases loaded and two out, York reliever Ronnie Morales hit third baseman Joe Jiannetti with a pitch to tie the game. Next, Lee Tabor was summoned in from the Revolution bullpen and got two strikes on leftfielder Richard Giannotti, before Giannotti laced a two-run double down the leftfield line to give the Blue Crabs a 4-2 lead. From there, shortstop Tanner Townsend would step to the plate and haunt his old team with a three-run homer over the leftfield wall to extend Southern Maryland's lead to 7-2.
After that, it was all up to Rodriguez who fired three final innings of shutout ball to get Southern Maryland for the win. It was the Blue Crabs' first complete game of the season as Rodriguez allowed only two runs on six hits, while striking out eight. The win moved Rodriguez's record to 4-4 for the season. The loss went to Morales (2-2) for York.
Townsend ended up going 2-5 with a homer and three RBI, while Giannotti and right fielder Adam Godwin each had two hits for Southern Maryland with Giannotti driving in two. York had only six hits for the game, including two from designated hitter Jose Herrera.
Southern Maryland and York will face off in the rubber game of their three-game series on Monday at 6:30. The Blue Crabs will send righty Michael Schlact (5-1, 3.62 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Corey Thurman (8-3, 3.76 ERA) for the Revolution. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
