M-Braves Falter Late in Extra-Inning Loss on Sunday

Mississippi Braves News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (29-20, 58-61) scored the final four runs of Sunday afternoon's series finale and came away with a 4-3 victory over the Mississippi Braves (23-26, 56-62) in 11 at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The M-Braves head back to Mississippi trailing in the division by 7.5 games and the wildcard by 6.5 games.

Claudio Custodio made the most recent spot start for the M-Braves, and his second start of 2019. The 28-year-old right-hander pitched valiantly over 4.0 innings of two-hit baseball, walking two and striking out two. With the promotions of Ian Anderson and Tucker Davidson, trade of Joey Wentz, and injury to Kyle Muller, the M-Braves rotation has taken a huge blow in August. The bullpen has answered the bell with a 1.48 ERA this month.

The M-Braves jumped on the scoreboard first thanks to a fourth-inning solo home run by Trey Harris. The 424-foot blast was the first for the Mizzou product at the Double-A level. Harris has reached base safely in 11-straight games and hit in ten of those contests. Daniel Lockhart added a two-run homer in the fifth inning, his sixth on the season to push the lead to 3-0.

Ben Rowen and Thomas Burrows combined for 2.0 scoreless innings behind Custodio to maintain the 3-0 lead. Jacksonville dented the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jazz Chisholm hit an RBI ground-rule double down the right-field line off of reliever Jason Creasy to make it 3-1. Creasy inherited two runners when Bradley Roney left the game with two outs in the inning. The former Southern Miss pitcher gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts over 1.2 innings.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Creasy walked leadoff hitter Riley Mahan and then Stone Garrett hit a two-run home run down the right-field line tying the game at 3-3. The homer was Garret's second in two days.

Each team failed to score during the tenth inning, and Mississippi went to the 11th inning in a contest for just the second time this season and the first time since April 5 at Tennessee. After failing to score in the top of the 11th, Jacksonville plated a run off a Kurt Hoekstra (L, 1-2) bases-loaded walk to pitcher Alex Vesia (W, 1-0) to end the game.

Jonathan Morales joined Harris with a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 on Sunday. The M-Braves dropped to 7-4 in extra-inning games this season and lost the season series to the Jumbo Shrimp, 11-10.

The M-Braves head back home to enjoy an off-day on Monday before beginning an 11-game series in ten days against Birmingham and Pensacola on Tuesday at Trustmark Park. The homestand opens with game one of a five-game series against Birmingham on Tuesday evening. RHP Connor Johnstone (5-2, 3.65) gets the start for Mississippi against Birmingham RHP Lincoln Henzman (2-6, 6.47). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm CT with coverage beginning at 5:20 pm on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, First Pitch App, and MiLB.tv (subscription required).

The Mississippi Braves are the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since the inaugural 2005 season, 146 M-Braves have gone on to Major League Baseball. The M-Braves have made postseason play four times and went on to win the Southern League Championship in 2008. Stop by Trustmark Park or call 888-BRAVES4 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
