Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Mississippi Braves (26-20, 65-50) weathered a two hour, 45 minute rain delay and were able to down the Jacksonville Suns (29-17, 65-51) by a 1-0 final in Wednesday's series-opening ballgame from Bragan Field.
Ryne Harper (W, 7-5) earned the win by getting the final two outs of the sixth inning following a long rain delay.
John Cornely (SV, 4) collected his fourth save of the year by working a hitless ninth inning, walking and striking out one Sun en route to closing out Wednesday's ballgame.
Despite not factoring into the decision, Jose Urena continued his excellent run of pitching by shutting the Braves out through six innings, only allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five batters in his Wednesday night outing.
Steve Ames (L, 2-2) took the loss for the Suns after allowing the only run of the game (earned) on two hits with one strikeout in his two innings of work.
Collin Cargill tossed a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning for Jacksonville, striking out one Mississippi Brave in his outing.
The game remained scoreless until the rain came down with one out in the bottom of the sixth, resulting in a 2 hour, 45 minute rain delay.
The Braves broke the scoreless tie with a lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Mycal Jones scored from second on Braeden Schlehuber's two-out RBI single to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh. The run would be the only by either side in the ballgame.
The Suns and Braves will be back at it with a doubleheader on Thursday, with first pitch of game one of the twin bill set for 5:35 p.m. In game one, the Suns will start right-hander Jay Rogers (6-3, 3.27) while the Braves will counter with a righty of their own in Greg Ross (4-2, 2.30). Game two will come approximately 30-45 minutes following the completion of Thursday's first ballgame with the Suns potentially throwing out left-hander Chipper Smith (3-3, 4.02) while Mississippi counters with right-hander Williams Perez (4-6, 3.25).
