Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Mississippi Braves (28-20, 67-50) completed a doubleheader sweep of the Jacksonville Suns (29-19, 65-53) on Thursday, winning 6-2 in game one and 3-2 in eight innings in game two from Bragan Field, securing a series victory in the process.

The Braves used 16 hits and their fair share of clutch two-out production to win game one by a 6-2 final.

Greg Ross (W, 5-2) collected the win for Mississippi, giving up a pair of runs (both earned) on six hits while walking two batters and striking out two Suns in 5.2 innings.

Andrew Robinson (SV, 1) earned his first save as a member of the Mississippi Braves, retiring all four batters he faced in his 1.1 innings of relief.

Jay Rogers (L, 6-4) was dealt the loss for Jacksonville as he allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits while walking and striking out one batter each in his three innings.

Jheyson Manzueta surrendered a single run (earned) on four hits in one inning of relief.

James Nygren worked the final three innings for Jacksonville, with Mississippi getting one run (earned) on four hits against him, with the righty striking out two batters in his game one outing.

The Braves hopped on the scoreboard first in game one, using some two-out magic to grab a run in the top of the first. A two-out RBI single by former Jacksonville Sun Rich Poythress gave the Braves a 1-0 lead after the first half inning of play.

Jacksonville answered right back with a run in the bottom of the first inning to level the ballgame up. Austin Nola came down to score on Brady Shoemaker's RBI groundout to tie the game up at 1-1 with one inning in the books.

Mississippi's two-out production continued as the Braves immediately re-took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second. The Braves received a Jose Peraza RBI double and a Kyle Wren RBI single to give the Braves a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning.

Rich Poythress (HR, 6) continued to punish his former team by leading off the third inning with a massive home run to give Mississippi a 4-1 advantage.

The M-Braves added to their lead on Cedric Hunter's two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth, making it a 5-1 Mississippi lead after three and a half innings of play.

Brady Shoemaker (HR, 9) helped the Suns cut into Mississippi's lead with an opposite field leadoff home run to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. Shoemaker's team-leading ninth homer of the year made it a 5-2 Braves lead.

The Braves got that run right back in the top of the seventh, using a RBI single from Mycal Jones to open up a 6-2 lead and cap off the scoring in game one.

Rich Poythress torched his former team again in game two, with his two-out RBI single in the eighth inning representing the game-winning run as the M-Braves completed the doubleheader sweep with a 3-2 victory in eight innings in the second game of the twin bill.

Ryan Kelly (W, 1-2) earned his first win as a Mississippi Brave by tossing two scoreless innings, giving up just a walk and a hit while striking out two batters in his winning performance.

Chipper Smith did not factor into the decision in his first start with the Suns off the Disabled List, allowing a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits in his four innings of work, walking two batters and striking out five in his game two outing.

Matt Ramsey retired all six batters he faced in a razor sharp two innings of relief, striking out three batters along the way.

Nick Wittgren (L, 4-5) took the loss by surrendering one run (earned) on three hits while collecting a pair of strikeouts in his two full innings of work.

The Braves took the lead two batters into the game, as Mycal Jones scored from first on shortstop Yosmany Guerra's throwing error on a ball put in play by Daniel Castro to give Mississippi the early 1-0 advantage.

Austin Barnes (HR, 7), fresh off of being named the Miami Marlins Minor League Player of the Month for July, continued his torrid stretch for the Suns by drilling a two-out solo home run to left field to level the ballgame up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

Just like in game one, Mississippi re-gained the lead quickly, using a two-out solo homer from Barrett Kleinknecht (HR, 5) to put the Braves back in front by a 2-1 score in the top of the second inning.

That score held until Brent Keys drove in Ryan Rieger from second base with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, knotting up the ballgame at 2-2 with four frames in the books.

The game moved into extra innings until Rich Poythress put the Braves ahead for good with a two-out RBI single back up the middle, giving Mississippi a 2-1 lead and capping off game two's scoring in the process.

The Suns and Braves will be off on Friday but will be back at it on Saturday, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. The Suns will start left-hander Justin Nicolino (10-3, 2.84) while the Braves will counter with right-hander Ryan Weber (5-4, 4.29).
