Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, AL - The Mobile BayBears were held scoreless by the Tennessee Smokies, falling 5-0 at Hank Aaron Stadium Friday night. After a one hour and thirty-two minute delay due to rain earlier in the Mobile area, RHP Braden Shipley took the mound for the BayBears to make his Double-A debut. RHP Felix Pena and the Smokies bullpen outshined Shipley, shutting out Mobile on just six hits.
The Smokies took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Luis Flores led-off the inning with a base hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then Pin-Chieh Chen drove in Flores with a RBI double. Addison Russell followed with a double of his own to drive in Chen for the two run advantage.
Tennessee struck again with a run in the sixth inning when Russell walked and scored on a Lars Anderson double. Two more runs came across in the top of the ninth for the Smokies when Christian Villanueva drove in Charlie Cutler and Chen with a two-run single, pushing the Smokies out to a 5-0 lead.
The loss was credited to Shipley despite a quality outing. The righty allowed three runs on just five hits, walking four and striking out five over six innings of work.
Pena stymied the BayBears bats, limiting Mobile to just three hits over 5.1 innings en route to his first Double-A win. Four Smokies relievers combined to shut out Mobile over the final 3.2 innings.
Mobile and Tennessee continue their series with game two of the five-game set scheduled for 7:05 PM Thursday night.
