Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced that Jacksonville Suns catcher Austin Barnes and pitcher Jose Urena have been named the Marlins Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for July 2014.

In July Barnes hit .330 (33-for-100) over 28 games with five home runs, 16 RBI and six doubles. He posted a .448 on base percentage and his slugging percentage over the month was .540.

Currently Barnes is hitting .291 with six homers and 28 RBI for the Suns in 54 games played. Earlier this season he was a Florida State League Midseason All-Star, hitting .317 for the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads.

This is the second Marlins monthly honor for Barnes, as he was also named the Marlins Minor League Player of the Month for June 2012 when he hit .340 (32-94) with 11 doubles, two home runs, and 15 RBI in 24 games with the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Barnes, listed by Baseball America as the No. 20 Marlins prospect, is a native of Riverside, California and was selected by the Marlins in the ninth round of the 2011 draft out of Arizona State.

Urena went 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA in six starts for the Suns during July. Over his 40 and two-thirds innings pitched, he held opponents to a .217 batting average while he struck out 34 batters compared to only eight walks. His final two starts of the month were brilliant, working seven scoreless innings against both Montgomery and Huntsville during Jacksonville's latest road trip as he earned victories in those contests.

Urena has not allowed a run in his last 23 complete innings on the mound and he is 10-7 with a 3.51 ERA in 21 starts this season for Jacksonville.

Urena joins Justin Nicolino as the only Suns to win a Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month award in 2014, as Nicolino collected the honor for June. This is the second time Urena has been named a Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month, as he was recognized by the organization for his outstanding month of June in 2013, where he was 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA in five starts for the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads.

Urena, listed by Baseball America as the No.7 Marlins prospect, is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and he was recognized as a 2014 Southern League Midseason All-Star.

The Suns and Braves will be back at it with a doubleheader on Thursday, with first pitch of game one of the twin bill set for 5:35 p.m. In game one, the Suns will start right-hander Jay Rogers (6-3, 3.27) while the Braves will counter with a righty of their own in Greg Ross (4-2, 2.30). Game two will come approximately 30-45 minutes following the completion of Thursday's first ballgame with the Suns throwing out Chipper Smith while Mississippi counters with right-hander Williams Perez (4-6, 3.25).

Suns fans can listen to Thursday's pair of games on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through http://www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 5:20 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
