Lynx Win In OT Over Ice Pilots 4-3

March 14, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

For the second straight night the Augusta Lynx went to an extra session at home, and again came out with two points in the contest. This time it was John Cronin's game winner at 3:03 of overtime giving the Lynx a 4-3 win over the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Sunday afternoon before 2,655 fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.

The Ice Pilots opened the scoring at 11:20 of the first period when Tyler Beechey beat Jason Saal to give his team a 1-0 lead. The goal ended Saal's shutout streak at a new team record of 187:21, breaking the old mark set by Tom Draper last season at 123:02. Augusta fought back, however, and evened the game at 12:38 on Greg Jacina's goal from Scott Kelman and Martin Lapointe. Twenty-nine seconds later, Jarrett Thompson scored from Todd Bennett and Louis Goulet to give the Lynx their first lead of the game through one period of play.

Pensacola bounced back with a pair of goals in the second period, starting at 4:39 when Jean-Francois Soucy scored to tie the game, and then again at 17:12 when Brian Collins put the Ice Pilots ahead once again for a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

The final frame was marked by Terry Marchant's power play goal at 5:06 from Goulet and Saal, as he roofed a shot over the right shoulder of Evgeni Konstantinov to tie the game for the Lynx and send it towards overtime. Unlike the previous night, however, the Lynx did not need a shootout. After making a diving block to thwart a 2-on-1 in his own zone, Cronin put a Scott Kelman feed just under the crossbar at 3:03 with help from Jonathan Gagnon for the victory, Augusta's second win in overtime this season. The Lynx also set a team mark in the game by not allowing a power play goal in their eighth straight contest, stopping the last 37 consecutive power play chances against over that span.

The Lynx are back in action on Tuesday night in Gwinnett against the Gladiators at 7:05 pm, followed by three home games starting Friday night against Charlotte, Saturday night against Gwinnett, and Sunday against Roanoke. Tickets for all remaining home games may be purchased through the Civic Center Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets, online at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (706) 828-7700.
