Fresno Falcons News Release

SAN DIEGO – The Fresno Falcons fought back from a three-goal deficit mid-way through the hockey game before eventually falling to the San Diego Gulls on Saturday at the San Diego Sports Arena, 5-4.

It did not take long for the Gulls to draw first blood. Just 34 seconds into the game Sylvain Deschatelets beat Fresno goaltender Terry Friesen on a wrap-around. San Diego then added to its lead while skating short-handed after Brian Gornick banged home a rebound to complete a three-on-two rush at 8:11. The Falcons remained on their four-minute power play and responded when Brian Passmore lifted a backhand past Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig at 10:23. San Diego's Mark Pederson answered with his league-leading 40th of the year at 15:36 of the first to chase Friesen from the game after stopping just two of the five shots he faced.

The Gulls opened a three-goal lead mid-way through the second period off a re-direct by Chris Gobert in front of Friesen's replacement, Mike Brusseau, at 10:33. The course of the game was quickly changed, though, after Mike Sandbeck and Michael Kiesman scored 23 seconds apart at 14:17 and 14:40, respectively, to draw Fresno back to within one through 40 minutes.

The Falcons continued their unlikely comeback early in the third when John Wroblewski ripped a slapshot past Koenig from along the right wing boards at 4:21. The Pacific Division leaders remained unfazed, though, and re-took the advantage when Greg Barber laced a perfect pass across the goal mouth to a streaking Deschatelets for the latter's second of the game and the game-winner at 10:47.

The loss drops Fresno to 18-37-6 on the year as they continue to reside in seventh place in the Pacific Division with 42 points.

The Falcons next take the ice when they return home on St. Patrick's Day to face the Long Beach Ice Dogs at 7 p.m. at Save Mart Center. The team will be wearing St. Patty's Day specialty jerseys during the game courtesy of A&M/ Big Bob's New & Used Carpets, which the club will auction off following the contest in the Bulldog Foundation Room at Save Mart Center. All of the proceeds from the auction of the game-worn St. Patrick's Day sweaters will benefit the United Way.

Tickets to the game versus the Ice Dogs can be purchased at Save Mart Center 's Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets, which include select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo Latino locations, charged by phone at 485-TIXS or bought online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon throughout www.fresnofalcons.com.
