Augusta Lynx News Release
Matt Dzieduszycki's hat trick combined with four total power play goals for the Augusta Lynx to pace them to a 6-4 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Sunday at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
Dzieduszycki opened the scoring with the first period's only goal at 5:23 from Jamie Johnson and Sean Connolly, one-timing a pass in the high slot past Checkers' netminder Alex Westlund for a power play goal to make it 1-0. Similarly, at 2:47 of the second period, Dzieduszycki struck again from Johnson and Louis Goulet on the power play for a 2-0 lead. That goal was followed by Augusta's third man advantage marker, this time from Eric Johansson at 8:43, with Connolly and Todd Bennett picking up the assists on the goal to make it 3-0 Lynx. Charlotte would finally answer back with a power play goal of its own at 16:45 from Mike Wirll to close the gap to 3-1 at the second period intermission.
Dusty Jamieson made it a 3-2 game just 1:12 into the final frame, but Johansson's second power play goal of the game made it 4-2, followed by an even strength marker from Ken Magowan at 12:55 to forge a three-goal lead. After Steve MacIntyre and Phil Cole picked up coincidental roughing calls to put the teams at 4-on-4 action, the Checkers would quickly score twice to draw within a goal once more. First, Wirll's second of the game made it 5-3 followed 26 seconds later by Jamieson's second of the contest to slash the lead to 5-4. From there, the Checkers continued to press the Lynx, but in the end was unable to notch a tying marker. Instead, Dzieduszycki reappeared on the score sheet for the hat trick with an empty net marker at 19:43 from Johnson and Colt King to seal the 6-4 win.
Jason Saal turned aside 24 shots in the contest for the win, making his best saves in the third period when Charlotte was pressing for the tie at 5-4. Westlund took the loss for Charlotte with 25 saves. Augusta finished 4-for-6 with the man advantage in the game, while Charlotte went 1-for-4.
With the win, Augusta earns five out of six points on the weekend and improves their record to 17-24-6. The next Lynx game action will be this coming weekend when they host Greenville on Friday night, followed by Pee Dee on Saturday night. Both games are slated for 7:35 pm face-offs, with the pre-game show kicking off one half-hour before game time on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630. Single game seats are now on sale for all remaining Lynx home games through the team office at (706) 724-4ICE, all TicketMaster locations, or via the web at www.TicketMaster.com.
