Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Charles Linglet scored his 18th goal of the year to go along with two assists as the Alaska Aces sent a sell-out crowd of 6,251 at Sullivan Arena home happy after a 5-1 win over the Wheeling Nailers Saturday.
The two teams took the ice shortly after the Anchorage Fire Department captured an 8-2 victory in the fifth annual "Guns-n-Hoses" charity game over the Anchorage Police Department, giving the fire-fighters a 3-2 lead in the series. The Aces managed a season-low two shots on goal in the first period and only 18 for the game, but nevertheless never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead on a tip-in by Chris Minard at 7:09 of the first period, his ECHL-leading 31st of the season. The power play goal came shortly after Wheeling had squandered almost six minutes of power play time to open the game.
The Nailers wasted three more opportunities with the man advantage in the second period, and again, Alaska made them pay dearly, scoring twice in 56 seconds to open up a three-goal bulge. Just after another failed Wheeling power play, Joe Talbot ripped a slap shot by Nailers goaltender Joe Exter at 10:33, a blazer that found the upper left corner of the net. Ryan Moren followed with his career-high seventh goal of the season, a wrist shot from between the circles set up by Scott Gomez at 11:29. The Aces ended the frame with a comfortable 3-0 working margin despite having been out-shot 20-8.
Ed McGrane provided a brief glimmer of hope for Wheeling with a one-timer at 8:10 of the final period, but two minutes later, Ryan Bast put the game away for Alaska with a backhander after being allowed to glide down the left boards and cut toward the slot without any interference. Linglet scored with 1:09 left in regulation to cap a three-point night for him and account for the final score of 5-1, the 15th victory for the Aces in their last 20 games.
On three separate occasions this year, Alaska (28-15-4 overall) has failed to sweep an opponent at home after taking the first two of a three-game series. Sunday's game at 5:05 p.m. offers the Aces a fourth opportunity to accomplish that feat and their fans a chance to participate in the KeyBank "Skate with the Aces" immediately following the contest.
Tomorrow's game between the Aces and the Nailers (28-16-2), who dropped into a first-place tie for the North Division lead with Toledo, will be broadcast live on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and be made available via video webcast for only $6.00 per game at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
