Gators lose heartbreaker to Grrrowl

Greenville, SC-Playing shorthanded due to call ups and the flu bug, the Louisiana IceGators lost in a shoot out to the Greenville Grrrowl 4-3, Sunday afternoon in the BiLo Center.

Just before game time, the Gators learned their top defenseman, Max Fortunus, would be unable to play due to the flu.The Grrrowl struck early in the game for the only goal of the first period. At 1:02, Carl Mallette led a two on one break. Nathan Marsters stopped the right wing shot by Mallette, but the rebound came right out in front and was easily tapped in by Krys Barch, his 8th, and a 1-0 Greenville lead.

The Gators gave up another early goal to begin the 2nd period, when Brock Radunske (9) scored on a three on one at the 2:02 mark, to give Greenville a 2-0 lead. Louisiana battled back and would score the next three goals. At 4:16, Jade Galbraith took a drop pass from Pascal Pelletier and fired home his 10th goal of the season, a glove side wrister, to cut the lead in half. Just 34 seconds later, at 5:00, Chris Thompson fired from the right circle, again high to the glove side, for his 13th and a tie game at 2-2. Pelletier picking up the assist, as did newcomer, Paul Lynch. At 12:11, Pelletier capped off a 3 point period by picking up a rebound off a Dave McCulloch slap shot and going backhand past Mike Broduer for his 7th of the season, good for a 3-2 Gators lead after 40 minutes of play.

Only one goal was scored in the 3rd period as Greenville, for the third time, scored early. At 2:49, on the power play, Jean-Francois Plourde (10) picked a loose puck and lifted it under the cross bar for a 3-3 tie. Neither team could score the rest of the way or in overtime. Richard Pitirri slid a back hander into the net in round three of the shoot out for the game winner. Broduer stopped all five Gators attempts in the shoot out to earn the Grrrowl a 4-3 victory. With the shoot out loss, Louisiana's record is now 17-23-4, 38 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators outshot Greenville 44-40. Power plays were 0-4 for the Gators and 1-5 for the Grrrowl. The Gators next game is a Tuesday morning affair when the team has a rematch with the Grrrowl at the unusual starting time of 9:30am CST.
