Lynx Drop 5-2 Decision To Everblades
March 2, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta's power play continues to click, but it wasn't enough to power them past the Florida Everblades Tuesday night in a 5-2 loss at TECO Arena.
Florida started the scoring quickly in the first period, tallying twice in 14 seconds against starting goaltender Jason Saal. The first goal came at the 4:09 mark when a giveaway at the Lynx line resulted in a 2-on-1 for Florida, and John McNabb buried a cross-ice pass from Chad LaRose to make it 1-0. Tom Buckley jumped the lead to 2-0 with his 100th goal in an Everblades uniform from Keith Anderson at 4:23, and then Mark White found the twine through traffic over the shoulder of Saal from Brian McCullough and Buckley to make it 3-0, ending the night for Saal. Gregg Naumenko stepped in and turned aside five shots the remainder of the way, but not before White whistled a shot off the crossbar behind him during the period. Augusta was out shot 17-8 in the opening frame, and headed into the second period with a three goal deficit.
In the second stanza, Augusta would score twice on the power play to turn a three goal chasm into a one goal valley. First it was Louis Goulet on the power play from Terry Marchant and Todd Bennett at 6:56, followed by Jarrett Thompson crashing the crease for a rebound off a Goulet shot at 9:44 to make it a 3-2 game. Florida, however, would grab a lucky bounce late in the period when Buckley threw the puck in front of the net and it deflected in off an Augusta player to put the Everblades ahead 4-2 at the break.
Third period action saw just one goal, and it was John McNabb grabbing his second of the night for a 5-2 final score from LaRose and Damien Surma. Naumenko finished with 21 saves for the Lynx, while Saal took the loss with nine saves. Rob Zepp stopped 28 of 30 shots to pick up the win. Augusta finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play, while Florida went scoreless in five chances.
The Lynx will now battle the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. Pre-game show will kick off on EAGLE 102 at 6:55 pm. Following that game Augusta travels to Columbus to take on the Cottonmouths Saturday night at 7:30 pm. Check out all the action on your home for Lynx Hockey, EAGLE 102!
