Augusta Lynx News Release

A furious late rally by the Augusta Lynx amounted to only one goal in a 3-1 loss to the Columbia Inferno on Saturday night before 3,315 fans at the Augusta Richmond County Civic Center.

The Inferno got on the board in the second period at 7:51 when Jesse Schultz scored from Alexandre Burrows and Tim Smith, followed by Smith's goal at 14:46 from Burrows and Schultz to give Columbia a 2-0 edge heading into the third period. Augusta came out with time on the power play early in the third period, but it was a shorthanded marker by Paul Cabana that sent Augusta to the ropes at 6:40, with Burrows and Sean Owens adding the helpers to make it 3-0. Terry Marchant entered the picture for the Lynx at 11:28 of the period, scoring on a hard shot from the bottom of the right circle, somehow driving the puck in off the arm of Inferno goaltender Rob McVicar. The goal energized the Lynx, who would pick up a full two minute five-on-three advantage when Schultz took a double minor for high sticking, and on the ensuing play Dennis Vial ended up in the box for roughing. Augusta, however, could not capitalize on the two-man advantage, and would get no closer than 3-1 as Columbia held them off over the final minutes.

McVicar ended the contest with 35 saves for the win for the Inferno, stopping 15 in the third period alone. Gregg Naumenko suffered the loss in net for the Lynx despite making 27 saves in the game. Louis Goulet and Brad Fraser chipped in assists on the goal for Marchant, who now has four in just two games with the Lynx.

Augusta will take to the ice tomorrow afternoon against the Checkers in Charlotte, with game time at 3 pm. The pre-game show will kick off on EAGLE 102 one-half hour before faceoff as the Lynx attempt to earn four out of six points on the weekend! The next home game for the Lynx will be on Thursday night against the South Carolina Stingrays, a 7:05 pm start.
