Clinton LumberKings News Release
Geneva, IL - The Clinton LumberKings won 7-4 on Tuesday evening to take the final three games of a four-game set with the Kane County Cougars. With the victory, Clinton has won three consecutive series and established a three-game lead for the final playoff berth in the Midwest League Western Division.
Dario Pizzano got the scoring started early with a solo home run in the first inning. His seventh long ball of the season gave Steven Ewing a lead before taking the mound. Ewing, making his LumberKings debut, got off to a shaky start in the first. Kane County immediately responded with a run to tie the game.
Clinton broke the 1-1 tie in the third inning with another crooked number. The LumberKings scored four times in the inning, including a bases-clearing double by Taylor Ard, to make it 5-1.
Gaby Guerrero drove home another run in the fifth to push the LumberKings' lead to five. It marked the eighth time in nine games that Clinton scored at least six runs.
Kane County tightened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ewing managed five solid innings, settling down after the opening frame. The left-hander departed with a 6-3 lead after allowing three runs on five hits.
The Cougars threatened the eighth and ninth innings, but Clinton held on. In both cases, Kane County brought the tying run to the plate, but George Mieses and Oliver Garcia finished off the win. Steven Ewing earned his first victory as a LumberKing in his Midwest League debut.
In addition to Pizzano's long ball in the first, D.J. Peterson hit a solo shot in the ninth inning. The first-round pick of the Seattle Mariners has seven home runs and 20 RBIs in 24 games with Clinton.
The LumberKings return home to Ashford University Field having won eight of their last nine games. Clinton will look to continue their success with right-hander David Holman (3-6, 3.29). The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers turn to right-hander Tyler Wagner (9-8, 3.24) in the series opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CT on Wednesday.
