Draogns Lose 6-3, Hold Ground in Wildcard Race

Dayton, Ohio-West Michigan starting pitcher Jake Thompson allowed just two hits and one unearned run over six innings as the Whitecaps topped the Dayton Dragons 6-3 on Tuesday night. The Whitecaps took three-out-of-four in the series.

The Dragons fell to 31-27 in the second half with the loss. They trail Great Lakes in the wildcard race by one and one-half games with 12 games to play. Great Lakes lost to Fort Wayne on Tuesday.

West Michigan jumped out to the lead with a three-run third inning, getting a run-scoring double from Jared Reaves and a two-run double by Dean Green to make it 3-0. They added three more runs in the fifth, keyed by a two-run single by Jason King to take a 6-0 lead.

The Dragons scored in the bottom of the fifth when Sammy Diaz doubled over the head of the right fielder with two outs to drive in Zach Vincej from third to make it 6-1. Then with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Gelalich singled to center field and went to second when Zach Vincej reached on an error. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, and Brandon Dailey singled to center to drive in two and make it 6-3. But Beau Amaral struck out to end the game.

The Dragons have dropped back-to-back home games for the first time since the first two games of the second half, June 20-21.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (7-4) suffered the loss. He worked four innings and allowed nine hits and six runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Tony Amezcua replaced Travieso and worked four scoreless innings before Jesus Adames pitched a perfect ninth.

The Dragons collected just four hits. Diaz had two doubles and went 7 for 14 in the series. Seth Mejias-Brean was 0 for 4 to snap his seven-game hitting streak. Dragons batters struck out 13 times. The 3-4-5 hitters in the batting order went a combined 0 for 12 with eight strikeouts.

The Dragons travel to Eastlake, Ohio to open a three-game series against the Lake County Captains on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Amir Garrett (1-2, 5.61) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Dylan Baker (7-6, 3.77). The Captains are right behind the Dragons in the playoff hunt, trailing Dayton by one and one-half games.
