Burlington Bees News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits cranked out nine runs on 14 hits to defeat the Burlington Bees 9-2 on Tuesday evening at Modern Woodmen Park.

Tyler DeLoach had an off night for the Bees (49-73, 23-34) and the offense could not take advantage of a couple of early opportunities against Josh Hader. DeLoach (5-4) surrendered a season-high five runs in 4 1/3 innings, while the Bees left 10 men on base, including six in the first four innings.

Quad Cities (71-54, 33-23) used a four-run fifth inning and added two more in both the fifth and sixth innings to take care of business in the series finale.

DeLoach had a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but the wheels quickly fell off for the southpaw. Austin Elkins led off the inning by driving a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for his sixth home run. Roberto Pena doubled and was sacrificed over to third by Jordan Scott. Tony Kemp laid down a perfect suicide squeeze, reaching on the bunt single and giving the Bandits the lead. After Teoscar Hernandez picked up a base hit, the Bees pulled DeLoach and went to Jake Boyd, who was greeted with a two-run single by Carlos Correa.

The Bees fell behind in the second after Bobby Borchering doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Elkins. Burlington came storming back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth against Hader (2-0). Sherman Johnson was hit by a pitch and moved to third on Garrett Cannizaro's single. Cannizaro tried to take second and was thrown out. Exicardo Cayones tripled home Johnson and later scored on Wade Hinkle's ground out. Hader loaded the bases in the third, but got out of the jam by striking out Cayones and inducing a ground ball out from Hinkle.

Burlington has fallen seven games back of Clinton and any combination of six Burlington losses or Clinton wins will eliminate the Bees from playoff contention. Burlington will head to Peoria to begin a three-game series at Dozer Park, which will begin Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
