Snappers Build Early Lead, Hold on for Win
August 20, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, WI - John Wooten picked up two hits and two RBIs and Matt Olson crushed a three-run homer, as the Beloit Snappers held off the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 6-4, in Midwest League action on Tuesday night as a crowd of 1,337 looked on.
With two straight wins, the Snappers earn a series split and move to 69-58 (26-31 in the second half). The Timber Rattles miss a chance to take the series and drop to 54-68 (25-32 in the second half).
An opportunity immediately presented itself for the Snappers when they loaded the bases in the first inning on an error and two walks off Michael Strong (3-4). A wild pitch brought across the night's first run and Wooten then laced a double into the gap in right-center that tallied two more for a quick 3-0 advantage. In the third, Beloit put two men on for Olson, who demolished a 2-1 pitch, hitting it over the right field wall for three more runs, doubling the lead to 6-0.
Wisconsin was able to break through in the fifth when, with two outs, Tyrone Taylor hustled out an infield hit and a walk put two men on. Another hit, this one by Parker Berberet, scored Taylor and sent starter Dylan Covey packing. Fortunately for the Snappers, Trevor Bayless came in and quickly recorded the inning's final out. The Timber Rattlers did get a run off Bayless in the seventh on an RBI Garrett Cooper triple, but Bayless' (1-1) performance was good enough for him to be credited with the win.
The Rattlers were able to coble together one last threat against Beloit in the eighth, as they waited out three walks to load the bases with one out. Chris Lamb was then summoned from the bullpen and got a ground ball, but it was only good enough for one out. One run came in on the fielder's choice and error on the play allowed a second runner to touch home, making the score 6-4. In the ninth, Lamb worked around a lead-off double, getting a strikeout and a line drive to short that was snared by Daniel Robertson, who then flipped to Christopher Bostick at second to complete the game ending double play. For his efforts, Lamb picked up his second save.
The next game Beloit plays will be in Kane County against the Cougars. They will send out RHP Dakota Bacus (9-5, 3.75 ERA) against RHP Felix Pena (4-6, 3.91 ERA). Game time is 6:30pm. The Snappers return to Pohlman Field for the final homestand of 2013 on Saturday, August 24th. That first game will start at 7:00pm and feature the second to last fireworks show of the season, sponsored by McDonald's of Beloit. Fans are also encouraged to wear their football jerseys to the ballpark on Packers vs. Bears night. All NFL teams are welcome as the Snappers get ready for the start of football season.
