Appleton, WI - Defensive mistakes by the Clinton LumberKings (22-29, 52-67) allowed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (29-22, 65-55) to strike first, and then take the lead for good, in their 6-2 win Wednesday night at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Timber Rattlers capitalized on two errors by Clinton. In the third, LumberKings starter Seon Gi Kim (1-3) committed his first error of the season, allowing Johnny Davis to reach first base with one out. Chris McFarland then singled Davis to third base and Michael Ratterree followed with a run-scoring single to right.

Trailing by just one run, Clinton tied the game at one in the fifth, thanks to a pair of two-out singles. Joe DeCarlo doubled to start the inning and two outs later, moved to third on an infield single by Clinton returnee Brett Thomas. With runners at the corners, Martin Peguero pounded a single to left, tying the game.

But in the bottom half of the fifth, Wisconsin took the lead and never looked back. Davis slapped a single to left to open the frame and was at second with two down when DeCarlo committed a fielding error, allowing David Denson to reach first safely. Clint Coulter - second in the league in both home runs and RBI - lined a two-run double to right, pushing the Timber Rattlers back in front, 3-1.

All three runs given up by Kim were unearned, but his offense couldn't bail him out of a tough-luck loss.

Wisconsin's lead widened to three in the sixth on a RBI fielder's choice by McFarland, and it was lengthened to four with two runs off of Kevin McCoy in the seventh.

Clinton's best scoring chance over the final three innings came before the stretch when they scored one run on a Peguero RBI double to right. His third hit moved Brett Thomas to third with just one away, but Aaron Barbosa and newcomer Nelson Ward were both retired by Luke Curtis, ending the LumberKings' last threat.

Preston Gainey (5-7) struck out eight batters over five impressive innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits and did not walk a batter on a very efficient 79 pitches, 50 for strikes.

Kim stranded runners in the first, third, and fourth innings, but could not get through the fifth. His ERA dropped from 2.92 to 2.71 in the loss.

Clinton's playoff hopes took a big hit with Cedar Rapids and Peoria both winning as well. The LumberKings sit seven games out of the wild card with 19 games remaining.

The series finale is set for 7:05 PM CT Thursday night. Clinton, seeking their fifth straight road series win, will send left- hander Eddie Campbell (8-8, 5.13) to the mound against Wisconsin right-hander Javier Salas (0-0, 2.70). The broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, wcciradio.com, and lumberkings.com.
