Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced that catcher/outfielder Mark Zagunis has joined the Cougars from Short-A Boise. Catcher/infielder Ben Carhart has been promoted from the Cougars to Class-A Advanced Daytona while outfielder Kevin Brown has been transferred to Short-A Boise. Today's roster moves put the Cougars at 24 active players as the team closes a home series against Quad Cities. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. this evening at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Zagunis (3rd round, 2014) becomes the third player from the Cubs' 2014 draft class to arrive at Kane County this season, joining 1st round pick Kyle Schwarber (currently with Daytona) and Chesny Young. The 21-year old Zagunis batted .330 with 10 doubles, 2 home runs and 39 RBI in 53 games at Virginia Tech in his junior season. Zagunis also stole 16 bases, was named All-ACC Second Team for the second time in his career, and he was a 2014 Johnny Bench Award semifinalist.

In 41 games at Boise, Zagunis was a Northwest League All-Star and batted .299 with 2 home runs and 27 RBI with an on-base percentage of .429. Defensively, Zagunis split time as catcher and outfielder.

Carhart (35th round, 2012) becomes the 11th Cougars player to receive a promotion to Daytona this season. Carhart was on the Cougars' Opening Day roster and in 102 games played (3rd-most behind Jacob Rogers and Carlos Penalver), Carhart batted .269 with 5 home runs and 43 RBI. Carhart spent the 2013 campaign at Daytona, batting .247 with 3 home runs and 51 RBI.

Brown (22nd round, 2013) joined the Cougars on July 8 to replace outfielder Yasiel Balaguert, who went on the disabled list with a foot injury. Balaguert is currently rehabbing with the Cubs' rookie league team in Mesa. In 22 games with the Cougars, Brown batted .221 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI. Balaguert went 1-for-5 on Monday for the Arizona Cubs.
