Midland, Mich. - An eight-run first inning helped the Great Lakes Loons (Class-A/Los Angeles Dodgers) salvage the finale of the series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) on Thursday night, 12-1. The Hot Rods had won the first two games of the series by a combined score of 14-7.

The first inning began with three of the first four batters reaching on walks to load the bases. With Brandon Trinkwon, Jesmuel Valentin, and Paul Hoenecke aboard and just one out, Joey Curletta put Great Lakes on the board with a two-run single to left field. Webster Rivas then delivered a double to plate Hoenecke and move Curletta to third base. Josmar Cordero followed with a single to drive home Curletta. After Jacob Scavuzzo was hit by a pitch, Spencer Navin delivered a soft single to left field to score Rivas and keep the bases loaded. They were cleared when Trinkwon doubled into the right-field corner, completing the eight-run inning.

Great Lakes would expand their lead, as Rivas hit a two-out home run in the second to make it 9-0. The Hot Rods would get on the board after the game moved to the fifth. James Harris led off the frame with his seventh home run of the season, but the lead was still 9-1

A two-run double from Valentin in the fifth stretched the lead to 11-1, and a lead-off home run by Curletta in the sixth completed the scoring. While it was a tough loss, the Hot Rods still captured the three-game series.

Jose De Leon (1-0) made his full-season debut for the Loons, and picked up the win after tossing six innings. He allowed just one run on three hits, and struck out seven batters without issuing a free pass.

D.J. Slaton (0-3) started the game for Bowling Green and picked up the loss.

Despite the defeat, the Hot Rods are still in the thick of the Midwest League playoff chase. They start a pivotal three-game series against the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) on the road on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. CT, and the Pepsi Pre-Game Show begins at 5:50 p.m. CT on the radio home of the Hot Rods, 1340 WBGN - The Ticket. Bowling Green returns home Monday, August 18.
