Peoria Chiefs News Release
BURLINGTON, IA- The Peoria Chiefs did not get a hit after the fourth inning and a bevy of defensive mistakes gifted the Burlington Bees four runs in a 4-2 Chiefs loss Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 64-57 overall 27-25 in the second half, two games out of a playoff spot with 18 games left.
The Chiefs fell behind in the bottom of the first against the Bees. With one on and nobody out, Kody Eaves hit what should have been a 3-6-1 double play but pitcher Luis Perdomo dropped the return throw from shortstop Juan Herrera. After a fly out that should have ended the inning, Eric Aguilera beat the shift with a single to left field and Perdomo walked Mike Fish on four pitches. Stephen McGee, who entered the game in a 3-for-30 slump, singled to right to score Eaves and Aguilera for a 2-0 Bees lead.
The Chiefs threatened in the second as Rowan Wick doubled with two outs but Daniel Hurtado struck out Cesar Valera to end the inning. In the third, Vaughn Bryan doubled with two outs and C.J. McElroy got the Chiefs on the board with a single to left to plate Bryan. McElroy was left at second as Herrera flew out to right to end the inning.
Burlington extended their lead in the bottom of third with the help of shaky Chiefs defense. Zach Houchins reached on an error by Herrera before Aguilera doubled to right. Fish delivered a sacrifice fly to center and Aguilera scored on a single to left by McGee for a 4-1 Bees lead.
A one-out double by Ronald Castillo set the stage for the Chiefs in the fourth inning and Wick was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a passed ball and Castillo scored on a Cesar Valera groundout to cut the Burlington lead to 4-2.
Perdomo (2-4) allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked one in the loss. Jhonny Polanco allowed one hit and walked one with four strikeouts over two shutout innings.
