Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - A season high four home runs by the Clinton LumberKings were all needed in an 9-8 10 inning walk-off win against the Lansing Lugnuts on Monday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Ariel Sandoval homered twice for Clinton (13-11, 52-42) in the team's first three-game home sweep of the Lugnuts (13-12, 56-39) in franchise history.
The LumberKings built a 5-1 lead early in the game with all of the runs scoring on home runs. Jack Larsen started the scoring with a three-run home run to right in the first inning for his 12th long fly of the year.
In the bottom of the third, Sandoval hit the first of his two home runs with one out in the inning for a solo shot to left that landed half way up the berm.
The LumberKings then added their third home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Juan Camacho slugged his second home run of the season over the berm in left to give Clinton what looked like a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Trailing by four, the Lugnuts rallied for a five-run inning in the top of the sixth. Oliver Jaskie came on in relief for starter Scott Boches and did not make it through the inning. Nine men came up for Lansing in the frame, only two reached with hits while three drew walks, and another runner reached on a fielding error by LumberKings second basemen Joseph Rosa.
Lansing then added to their lead with a two-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Gold drove in both runs in the inning for the Lugnuts with a bases loaded single to right, putting Lansing on top 8-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, the LumberKings first two batters reached; Zach Scott on a walk and Rosa on a hit-by-pitch. The Lugnuts then turned to reliever Dany Jimenez whose second pitch to Sandoval was redirected to left for a three-run homer, his second of the day and 13th of the season, tying the game at eight.
The game remained tied through regulation and headed to the 10th. Clinton reliever Collin Kober worked around the free base runner at second to start the inning, as per Minor League Baseball's extra inning rules, and struck out two. With the potential tying run at third, Kober (5-0) retired Samad Taylor on a fly out to left.
The LumberKings came to bat in the bottom of the eighth and promptly loaded the bases with one out against Lugnuts reliever Orlando Pascual. Johnny Adams came up with the bases loaded in his first and only plate appearance of the game. On the seventh pitch of the plate appearance from Pascual (0-2) he drew a walk to force home the winning run and stretch the LumberKings winning streak to four games.
The win also marks the first time in franchise history that the LumberKings have swept a three-game series from Lansing in Clinton.
The LumberKings will take tomorrow off for travel and then open a three-game series with the Lake County Captains in East Lake, Ohio. Clinton will throw right-hander Rady Bell (1-2, 8.64) in the series opener. Game time is slated for 6:00 PM (CDT). Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tune in radio ap at 5:45 AM with the pregame show.
