July 16, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (5-17,35-56) got a day off after the rain ended up flooding a majority of the field but fell in game one of Sunday's double header to the Great Lakes Loons (6-17,30-61) 1-0. Luis Pasen (1-0) earned his first win, after going one and a third inning, allowing just one hit, two walks, and throwing two strikeouts. Michael Santos (1-1) suffered the loss by giving up the lone run of the game but did strikeout three batters.

Bees can't capitalize on scoring opportunities

Burlington had multiple opportunities to score runs in game one but couldn't manage to bring anything across. Leonardo Rivas led the game off with a walk, and Torii Hunter was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, two strikeouts would end the inning. Kevin Williams Jr led the fourth off with a walk and Spencer Griffin reached on a fielding error by Deacon Liput to put runners on first and second with no outs. Keinner Pina then singled to right and Williams Jr decided to go for home, but a great throw by Romer Cuadrado to home was in time for Gersel Pitre to tag Williams Jr for an out. Martinez and Williams Jr each drew two out walks to load the bases in the fifth, but Hunter was called out on strikes to end the inning.

Liput finally puts a run on the board

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Deacon Liput took a 3-1 pitch well over the wall in left for his first homerun as a professional baseball player, giving the Loons a 1-0 lead. Orlando Martinez sent a ball very deep to center, but it wasn't quite deep enough, as Brayan Morales made the grab for out number three, giving the Loons the win.

Great from Soriano and Pina

Despite a tough loss, the Bees got some great performances from Jose Soriano and Keinner Pina. Soriano had his best start with the Bees, going four innings, allowing just one hit, no walk, and striking out five. Andrew Wantz also had a nice game in relief, striking out three in an inning of work. Keinner Pina led the offense, going 2-3 and nearly getting an RBI. Alvaro Rubalcaba had the other hit for the Bees and also reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Loons continue great pitching

It was another great outing on the mound for the Great Lakes pitching staff, as they pitched their second shutout in the past four games. Gerardo Carrillo started the game for the Loons and went four and two thirds innings, gave up two hits, two walks, and struck out four. Jasiel Alvino picked up his second save for his inning of relief in the seventh. Great Lakes has now allowed just two runs in the past four games.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will conclude their homestand in the final game against the Loons tomorrow night at 6:30. Neither team is yet to announce a starter for the game.
