Five Ex-Rattlers Heading to MLB All-Star Game

July 16, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Five former Wisconsin Timber Rattlers - Lorenzo Cain, Shin-Soo Choo, Scooter Gennett, Mitch Haniger, and Jeremy Jeffress - are set to participate in the 2018 Major League All-Star Game in Washington, DC on Tuesday night. This is the second all-star game for Cain. The rest will be appearing in their first Midsummer Classic.

Cain played very briefly for the Rattlers in 2009 as he was rehabbing from an injury. The Milwaukee Brewers outfielder appeared in 15 games for Wisconsin that season before moving to Double-A later that season. Cain was an All-Star in 2015 as a member of the Kansas City Royals. That was also the season the Royals won the World Series over the New York Mets.

Choo is the 2018 All-Star with the longest time between being a Timber Rattler and being named an MLB All-Star. Choo, who will be representing the Texas Rangers this season, was a Rattler at the very end of the 2001 season and for most of the 2002 season when Wisconsin was affiliated with the Seattle Mariners. The outfielder was named a Midwest League Post-Season All-Star as an outfielder after he played 119 games and hit .302 with six homers, 34 stolen bases and 48 RBI as a Rattler in 2002.

Haniger, who is currently with the Seattle Mariners, is the 2018 All-Star with the shortest amount of time between being a Rattler and becoming an MLB All-Star. Haniger was sent to the Timber Rattlers by the Brewers right after the 2012 draft and played 14 games before being shut down due to an injury. He came back to the Rattlers and played 41 games with five homers and 25 RBI with the team before being moved up the Brevard County Manatees in 2013.

The final two All-Stars on the list were teammates on the 2010 Timber Rattlers: Scooter Gennett of the Cincinnati Reds and Jeremy Jeffress of the Brewers.

Gennett was named to play in the 2010 Midwest League All-Star Game in Fort Wayne as the starting shortstop for the Western Division. He was also the shortstop on the Midwest League's Postseason All-Star team in 2010. Gennett hit .309 with nine homers and 55 RBI in 118 games as a Timber Rattler. He is leading the National League in hitting with an average of .326 heading into the All-Star Break

Jeffress pitched in five games for the Timber Rattlers in 2010 as he worked his way back into shape after a suspension. In his short time with the Rattlers, Jeffress pitched eight scoreless innings, did not give up a hit, walked three and struck out 14.

The 2018 Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday before resuming action on Wednesday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to start a six-game homestand on Wednesday with Freddy Peralta set to start for Wisconsin.
