Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

July 13, 2006 - The Clinton LumberKings snapped a nine-game losing streak by using a 10-run eighth inning as they handed the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 14-5 loss at Veterans Memorial Stadium in front of 2,534 fans on Intermec and 100.7 The Fox Buck-A-Cup Thursday.

The Kernels spotted Clinton a 2-0 lead in the first inning and twice cut the lead down to one run. In the fifth, Hainley Statia drew a two out walk and scored as Marco Albano tripled to right. Clinton tacked on two more runs in the sixth to make the score 4-1 and the Kernels once again cut the lead to one run as the Kernels took advantage of two Clinton errors to score Dallas Morris and Stantrel Smith.

Then, the rain came down and game was delayed for 45 minutes. Kernel lefty Mike Pete had come on in relief of Daniel Hawkins and thrown one pitch to John Whittleman when the skies opened and the umpires called for the tarp. When play resumed, Tim Didjurgis had taken over for Pete. Clinton must have used the delay to their advantage as they sent 13 men to the plate and took advantage of five Kernel walks in the inning and hang a 10-spot on the Kernel bullpen. The final blow, a 3 run home run by John Kemp to right field off Tim Mattison to make the score 14-3 LumberKings.

The Kernels scored two runs off reliever Gerry Oakes in the ninth. The first on a Brett Martinez solo home run and the second on a Flint Wipke RBI single that scored Stantrel Smith.

Kernels starter Anthony Ortega (1-1) battled control problems as he gave up five hits and four runs (two earned) over five innings and was saddled with the loss. He walked three and struck out four. Clinton starter Zach Phillips (3-6) scattered three hits over five innings to get the win, allowing one run and striking out eight Kernels while walking only two.

The rubber match of this three game series is Friday night at 7 pm. Stephen Marek (9-2) starts for the Kernels against Juan Jimenez (2-5). It will be Armed Forces Night, presented by the Milling Company. The Kernels will wear special camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off via a silent auction during the game. Pre-game ceremonies include a fly-over by CH-47 Chinook helicopters and a 21-gun salute performed by the VFW Honor Guard.

It will also be Pat McGrath Chevyland Used Car Night. Fans over 18 have a chance to win one of three used cars that will be given away during the game. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
