
Maybin, Whitecaps blast past Devil Rays

BATTLE CREEK - Cameron Maybin hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lead West Michigan to a 6-4 victory over Southwest Michigan. Maybin's opposite field home run was the third of the game for the Whitecaps.
Mike Hollimon hit his team leading eighth home run of the season for West Michigan to give the âCaps a 1-0 lead in the second. Dusty Ryan tied the game at 3-3 with a solo shot for the Whitecaps in the seventh.
Maybin was walked in each of his first three plate appearances on the night. In the fourth, he stole second and third before coming home on a single by Justin Justice, which tied the game, 2-2.
Cesar Suarez hit a two-run homer to put the Devil Rays in front, 2-1 in the third. And infield hit by Jackson Brennan drove in another go-ahead run for Southwest Michigan in the sixth for a 3-2 advantage.
Erik Averill pitched seven innings as the Whitecaps starter and allowed three runs (2 ER) to earn the win and improve to 5-4.
Anthony Claggett rebounded from his first blown save of the season on Wednesday to retire the side in order in the bottom of the ninth and pick up his eighth save of the year.
A Little Closer: West Michigan manager Matt Walbeck is now one win away from becoming the second skipper in team history with 200 wins. Bruce Fields won 331 games in four seasons from 1997-2000.
The Last Day: West Michigan's final regular season game at C. O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek will by Friday night. LHP Jake McGee (6-6, 2.52) is expected to be on the mound for the Devil Rays against Whitecaps RHP Burke Badenhop (8-2, 3.40). First pitch is slated for 7:35 p.m. The Whitecaps Pre Game Show begins at 7:25 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at wbbl.com.
