Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - The Fort Wayne Wizards did on Thursday evening what they couldn't do Wednesday, survive a Lugnuts comeback. The Wizards blew a three run lead but fought back to take a 6-4 decision over Lansing before 7,639 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
The Wizards plated the first run of the game in the first inning. Mike Sansoe led the game off with a triple to right-center field and scored on a Will Venable groundout to make it 1-0.
Fort Wayne added another run in the second and stretched the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a Seth Johnston solo homer.
Lansing would tie the game up in the fifth inning. Josh Bell and Yuber Rodriguez each singled before Sean Shoffit ripped a double to center field that scored both runners. The hit cut the lead to 3-2. Shoffit later scored on a Jacob Butler groundout to knot the score at 3-3.
The Wizards took the lead for good in the sixth frame when David Freese scored on a Kyle Blanks single to right field that made it 4-3. Blanks would come home later in the inning on a Brandon Gottier groundout. His run would prove to be huge.
In the bottom of the sixth, Brian Pettway belted a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 5-4, however the Lugnuts could not manage any more offense in the game.
Gregory Burke (2-2) got the win for the Wizards, throwing six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Randy Dicken (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for Lansing, tossing one inning and surrendering two runs.
Lansing (49-39, 9-12) and Fort Wayne (40-48, 9-12) will play the rubber game of the series on Friday evening. Kristian Bell (6-5, 4.58) will get the nod for the Lugnuts, while Stevie Delabar (6-6, 3.26) will hurl for the Wizards. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with LAFCU Fireworks to follow the game.
