Burlington Bees News Release

Geneva, IL (July 13, 2006) The Burlington Bees (9-12, 44-44) scored five runs in their last two at-bats, but the Kane County Cougars (12-9, 52-38) held on for a 7-5 victory at Elfstrom Stadium tonight. This series is now tied up at one while the Bees still lead the season series 5-4.

The Cougars were in control through the first seven innings thanks to a solid performance from starter Jared Lansford (8-5). The 19-year-old right-hander allowed just three hits and three walks and matched his career-high with seven shutout innings. He earned the win when the bullpen hung on to close out the game.

Bees' starter Mario Santiago pitched seven shutout innings in his last start, but ran into trouble early tonight. The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single by Jose Pineda and a sacrifice fly by Chad Boyd. One of the runs was unearned when Ethien Santana committed his first error of the season while fielding Pineda's hit. The Cougars tacked on two more in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Steve Kleen and a two-out RBI double by Isaac Omura. Santiago (1-2) came out after 4.2 innings and got the loss. Yovany Damico pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and struck out four to get through the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, the Cougars brought in Brandon Dewing for his Midwest League debut after getting called up today from short-season Vancouver. After getting the first two outs, Mario Lisson singled and scored on a double by Miguel Vega. Jeff Howell added a single to right-center to drive in Vega and the Bees were within three at 5-2.

The Cougars responded in the bottom of the eighth inning with two crucial insurance runs against Kraig Schambough. With one out, Toddric Johnson singled for his career-high third hit of the game and Frank Martinez doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. With the infield in, Omura singled up the midp the middle to drive in both runners for his fourth hit of the game and the Cougars led 7-2.

In the top of the ninth, John Herrera took over on the mound and walked Carlos Arroyo, Valentino Arce, and pinch-hitter Omar Pena on 13 pitches to load the bases. The Cougars then turned to Brad Kilby who went to 3-2 on Jose Duarte before a slow groundball to the right side turned into the first out on a ranging play by Omura as all the runners advanced and Arroyo scored to make it 7-3. Josh Johnson then singled up the middle to drive in Arce and Pena and the Bees were within two at 7-5. Lisson singled to put the tying runs on base before Kilby got Vega to popout and struck out Howell to end the rally and record his third save of the year.

The Bees and Cougars will play the rubber match of this three-game series tomorrow night at 6:30 at Elfstrom Stadium. Carlos Rosa (6-5, 3.03) will start for the Bees against LH Joe Piekarz (3-3, 2.93) for the Cougars. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
