Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Thursday night by a score of 6-4. The Whitecaps blasted three homeruns off of the Rays bullpen to ensure them the victory.
Matt Walker took the mound for the Rays for 5.2 innings of work. Walker fanned two Caps while giving up two hits and two earned runs. The first run against Walker came via a towering homerun by Mike Holliman over the centerfield wall. Top prospect Cameron Maybin crossed home for the second run against Walker. Maybin walked and proceeded to steal second and third base and was driven home on a Justin Justice single to right field.
Aaron Walker entered in relief of Matt (no relation) to finish out the sixth inning. Aaron tossed 1.2 innings. He fanned a pair of Whitecaps and gave up four hits and four earned runs. Catcher Dusty Ryan and Cameron Maybin both went yard against Walker.
Chris Kelly was perfect in the final 1.2 innings of the match up. Kelly struck out one batter.
Cesar Suarez had his mother in town from his native country of Venezuela. He gave her a show because in the third inning he launched a homerun into the leftfield seats with one man on and one out. Cesar went 1-4 with a run scored and two RBI on the night.
Jackson Brennan reached base on his first three at-bats with two walks and an RBI single.
Matt Devins played first base for the first time in his professional career and did a heck of a job. Devins went 1-1 with a run scored and a walk. The most impressive play of the night came when Devins fielded a ball down the first base line and flipped the ball behind his back from foul territory towards the bag for Matt Walker to grab and make the putout. Devins extended his hit streak to seven games with his leadoff double to leftfield in the third inning.
The Devil Rays and Whitecaps will play the series rubber match on Friday night. The Devil Rays play their final regular season game against the longtime rival Whitecaps. After the game there are fireworks presented by Q106.5 FM and The Greater Guide.
