Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities could not score after the first inning Thursday night, stranding 10 men on base - including a pair in the bottom of the ninth - in a 2-1 loss to the Beloit Snappers at John O'Donnell Stadium. In a match-up of dueling Canadian hurlers named Adam, the Snappers' Adam Hawes picked up the win over the Swing's Adam Daniels in front of a season-high 5,926 fans.
Quad Cities (11-10, 45-44) filled the ballpark with the second-largest crowd since John O'Donnell Stadium underwent major renovations prior to the 2004 season, as 6,074 faithful fans packed the park in a game against Battle Creek on July 16, 2004. Beloit (12-9, 47-42) snapped a four-game skid against the Swing and pulled one game ahead of Quad Cities in an all-time series between the two teams that currently stands at 120-119.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Swing did not go down without a fight. Jose Martinez singled with one out and was taken down for pinch-runner Casey Rowlett. Shane Robinson than battled hard in a long at-bat, fouling off pitch after pitch before finally coaxing a walk on the tenth offering of the sequence. But with men on first and second and one out, Daniel Nelson bounced into a 6-4-3 double play on the first pitch he saw to end the game.
The ballgame started out on a positive note, as Quad Cities wasted no time in taking an early lead in the top of the first inning. Robinson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a bloop-single that dropped down in shallow center. After stealing second base and moving to third on a groundout, Jon Jay brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left for the 1-0 advantage.
Beloit tied the game in the top of the third, as Edward Ovalle doubled to the wall in left to put himself in scoring position. Paul Kelly bounced a two-out groundball up the middle that snuck underneath the glove of shortstop Tyler Greene, scoring Ovalle to even up the score at 1-1.
In the fifth inning the Snappers took their first lead of the series. Jose Leger lined a single into left field and scored from first one batter later on a double by Toby Gardenhire. But with Gardenhire at third later in the frame, a pitch snuck through the legs of catcher Bryan Anderson and the baserunner broke for home. Anderson hustled back to grab the loose ball and fired it to the plate in time, as the pitcher Daniels applied the tag to cut down Gardenhire and hold the deficit at 2-1.
Adam Daniels (4-8) took the loss despite six solid innings, scattering eight hits while allowing two runs. The southpaw from North Vancouver, British Columbia, recorded six strikeouts - all of them swinging - without issuing a walk, but got the short end of the stick in the match-up between the two countrymen.
A native of Penetanquishene, Ontario, Adam Hawes (4-3) also lasted six innings while allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out two and walked three, holding Quad Cities in check after a rough start to the game that included one run, two hits, and three walks through the first two innings.
David Shinskie (4) earned the save with three strong innings of relief, retiring the first seven batters he faced before allowing two baserunners in the ninth. He fanned three while giving up one hit and one walk. In five appearances against Quad Cities in 2006, Shinskie is 1-0 with one save and a 0.73 ERA over 12.1 innings.
UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will take on the Beloit Snappers in the rubber game of the three-game set on Friday, as RHP Cory Meacham (8-5, 2.98) is scheduled to pitch against LHP Alexander Smit (2-1, 4.41). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 will begin at 6:45 p.m.
