Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (22-10, 60-39) swept the West Michigan Whitecaps (16-16, 48-53) in a Thursday night doubleheader, rallying for a dramatic 8-4 extra-inning win in the opener before winning a 3-2 rain-shortened nightcap at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Lansing improved to 12-2 against West Michigan in 2011, including three doubleheader sweeps of the Whitecaps.
In the first game, the Lugnuts went to the seventh and final inning trailing 4-0 having been held hitless through the first six innings by West Michigan starter Kyle Ryan.
Jake Marisnick garnered the first hit in the game for Lansing, leading off with an infield single against Nathan Newman, and Carlos Perez drove him home with an RBI single to end the shutout. Four batters later, Garis Pena brought in K.C. Hobson, and Oliver Dominguez with a game-tying, two-out infield single off ace reliever Bruce Rondon, necessitating extra-innings.
The Lugs rocked Whitecaps reliever Clemente Mendoza (Loss, 1-3) in the first extra frame, scoring four runs on three hits. Hobson knocked in the go-ahead run with a single, and Dominguez added the icing on the cake with his second home run of the season.
The relief duo of Alesone Escalante and Dayton Marze (Win, 4-5) held the Caps scoreless for the final four innings.
In the nightcap, the Lugnuts scored three unanswered runs to wipe out an early 2-0 deficit before a storm front came through one out into the bottom of the sixth and wiped out the remainder of the game.
Marisnick and Marcus Knecht provided back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning off Whitecaps starter Alex Burgos (Loss, 5-2).
In the fifth, Michael Crouse scored the go-ahead run thanks to a throwing error by shortstop Dixon Machado.
Egan Smith (Win, 5-4) received the shortened complete game, allowing two unearned runs on four hits while striking out three.
After an 45-minute lightning/rain delay, the game was ruled complete, and the Lugnuts came away with the twinbill sweep.
The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium to take on the Lake County Captains and the South Bend Silver Hawks in a seven-game homestand stretching from Saturday, July 30th, to Friday, August 5th. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
