Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings snapped a 4-4 tie in the seventh as they scored four runs to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-4 on Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field. All four runs scored with two outs as Kevin Rivers plated the winner with a single to right and a two-run double by Stefen Romero and RBI single by Kalian Sams provided insurance.
The Rattlers had just tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh as Mike Brownstein singled, moved up on two wild pitches by right-hander Matt Bischoff and scored on a sacrifice fly by T.J. Mittelstaedt. Wisconsin right-hander Greg Holle retired the first two batters easily in the bottom of the seventh but saw the inning extended as Mike McGee singled to right.
A walk to Julio Morban kept the frame going, and Rivers chopped a single past Mittelstaedt at second. Right-fielder Chad Stang came up firing to the plate, but his throw to catcher Joey Paciorek was just late on a sliding McGee. One pitch later, Romero lined a two-run double into the left-field corner to score Morban and Rivers. Sams capped the inning with a jam-shot single to center scoring Romero. All four runs were earned to Holle (L, 0-4) over his 1.0 inning of work.
The LumberKings trailed 3-0 heading into the fourth inning as Wisconsin scratched out two runs on right-hander George Mieses in the second inning and went ahead by three on a solo home run by Jason Rogers in the fourth. Mieses exited with three runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings in his team-leading 20th start for Clinton.
After failing to get a hit off Rattlers' right-hander Jimmy Nelson over the first three innings, the Kings notched a run in the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Mickey Wiswall. In the fifth, they'd tie the score on a two-run single to right by Julio Morban and go ahead 4-3 on an RBI groundout to first by Rivers scoring McGee. Nelson exited with four runs allowed over 5.2 innings in a no-decision.
Bischoff (W, 2-2) failed to hold that lead in his second blown save, but earned the win instead with a run over 2.0 innings. Right-hander Tyler Blandford struck out two of the three he faced in the eighth and right-hander Tyler Burgoon struck out two in a non-save ninth.
Eight of the nine Clinton hitters had at least a hit and all nine starters reached base. Morban (2-for-4, run, 2 RBI), Rivers (1-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Romero (1-for-4, double, run, 2 RBI) all had multi-RBI games for the LumberKings, who extended their winning streak to a season-high-tying three straight games. The Kings remain in third place in the West, 2.0 games behind first-place Kane County.
Rogers went 3-for-4 with his fourth home run and an RBI for Wisconsin.
The LumberKings (17-15) conclude the series with the Timber Rattlers (13-19) tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (3-3, 3.45) gets the start for sweep-minded Clinton against Wisconsin left-hander Charly Bashara (4-3, 3.90).
