MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons never recovered from a three-run deficit created by the South Bend Silver Hawks Thursday night at Dow Diamond, dropping the three-game series with still one game to go after the 3-2 loss.

South Bend scored the first run in the second inning; loading the bases on a single, hit-by-pitch and a Jesse Bosnik throwing error, before cashing in on a double-play ball to shortstop Bryant Hernandez. The Silver Hawks added two more in the third inning, in which they connected for three hits.

The Loons cut into the Silver Hawks lead by scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Right fielder Nick Akins hit a single to lead off the inning and Chris Jacobs followed with an infield single to Silver Hawk shortstop Zach Walters. On the play, Walters quickly turned and whipped the ball over the second baseman, which counted as a two-base error that scored Akins and allowed Jacobs to third. With no outs, catcher Michael Pericht knocked a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it 3-2 and record the final run of the game.

"The last two nights here at home, South Bend has done a nice job pitching against us," Loons manager John Shoemaker said after the game. "We haven't been able to take advantage of our very few opportunities that we've gotten."

The Silver Hawks starting pitcher, Bradin Hagens, commanded the game, limiting the Loons to two unearned runs on six hits across six innings of work. The righty picked up his sixth win, fanning four Loons and walking one. The South Bend pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts Thursday night. Eury De La Rosa provided two of those strikeouts to preserve the win and notch his third save.

Starting on the hill for the Loons was Angel Sanchez, who surrendered all three runs on six hits over four innings. Raul Burgos, Bret Montgomery and Scott McGough combined for five scoreless innings, four strikeouts and one walk.

Offensively, the Loons were led by lead-off batter Leon Landry, who went two-for-four. Pericht extended his hit streak to six-games with a single to centerfield in the second inning.

The Loons will wrap up the nine-game homestand on Friday night looking to avoid the sweep by the South Bend Silver Hawks. Getting the start for the Loons will be LHP Rick Anton (0-0, 0.00) against South Bend's RHP J.R. Bradley (4-12, 4.90). Making a special appearance at Dow Diamond will be the world-famous Zooperstars, presented by Charter Communications.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fifth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
