Early Runs Enough for Silver Hawks

Midland, MI - Three runs in the first three innings were enough for the South Bend Silver Hawks on Thursday night as they held off the Great Lakes Loons in a 3-2 victory at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. The win brings the Hawks within four games of a playoff spot with 38 to go in the second half.

The Silver Hawks got the scoring started in the top of the second against Loons' starter Angel Sanchez (LP, 5-3). Matt Helm was hit by a pitch, Roberto Rodriguez singled, and Niko Gallego reached on a sacrifice combined with an error to load the bases. Even though Chris Jarrett hit into a double play, Helm scored to give the Silver Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Ender Inciarte and Gerson Montilla led off the third with back-to-back singles, and the Hawks had runners at the corners after Zach Walters hit into a fielder's choice. Yazy Arbelo walked to load the bases and Helm picked up a RBI with a single to left field. Rodriguez added a RBI groundout and the Hawks took the 3-0 lead to the fourth.

South Bend struggled with runners in scoring position for the second night in a row, going just 1-for-12 in those situations on Thursday. Now 2-for-21 with RISP in this series, South Bend is fortunate to have won the first two games due to great pitching.

Bradin Hagens (WP, 6-4) turned in the second strong starting performance of the series with six innings and only two unearned runs allowed. He follows up Jeff Shields from last night who threw seven scoreless innings as the starting pitching has led the way in this series.

Chris Odegaard (ND) followed up Hagens with two scoreless innings that included three strikeouts and Eury De La Rosa (SV, 3) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two K's to complete the victory.

The series wraps up on Friday evening with another 7:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP J.R. Bradley (4-12, 4.90 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Silver Hawks against RHP Rick Anton (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Great Lakes.
