Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - The Dayton Dragons pitching staff turned in a great performance Tuesday night. The Lansing Lugnuts staff was better. Matt Liuzza's RBI double in the 11th inning broke a tie game and proved to be the difference for the Lugnuts, as they defeated the Dragons 2-1 at Fifth Third Field Tuesday night.

Liuzza drove a 2-2 pitch from Joseph Krebs over the third baseman and into the left field corner. The smash allowed Darin Mastroianni to race home from first base to score to eventual winning run.

The Lugnuts pitching staff was outstanding throughout the night, as the Dragons lone run came in the first inning of play when Brandon Waring's double down the left field line scored Denis Phipps from first base to make it a 1-0 game.

Brad Mills turned in a quality start for Lansing after conceding just one run on four hits. Alan Farina followed him by tossing 3 2/3 innings of hitless baseball while fanning six. Farina also retired the first 11 batters that he faced and allowed just one man to reach, which came on a walk.

Ross Buckwalter (1-0), who would be credited with the win, recorded the final four outs. In all, the three hurlers combined to hold Dayton to just four hits and held the Dragons without a knock for the final six innings. Dayton only had one base-runner in that time too.

Lansing got on the board in the third when Kevin Ahrens drove a double over Dayton center fielder Justin Reed's head. The hit plated Justin Jackson and tied the game at 1-1.

Dayton's Joseph Krebs (4-2) shouldered the loss after giving up the run in the 11th.

Lansing (22-22) and Dayton (22-21) will continue the series on Wednesday night. Randy Boone (4-1) will get the start for the Lugnuts, while Scott Carroll (1-2, 3.14) will pitch for the Dragons. The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
