Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Matt Liuzza lined a double to left field to bring in pinch runner Darin Mastroianni from first base in the 11th inning as the Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Dayton Dragons 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Dragons, who have lost seven of their last eight games, dropped to 22-21 on the season. They are in second place, one game out of first.
The game-winning rally for the Lugnuts against Dragons reliever Joseph Krebs (4-2) began with an infield single by Manny Rodriguez, a slow roller up the third base line that put the tie-breaking run on base with no one out. Liuzza twice attempted to get a bunt down but after getting into a two-strike hole, swung away and drilled a liner to the left field corner. Mastroianni scored easily to break the tie.
The Dragons, who did not have a hit after the fifth inning, went down in order in the bottom of the 11th.
Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brandon Waring lined a double to left field to bring in Denis Phipps from first base. Lansing tied the game in the third on an RBI double by Kevin Ahrens.
The Dragons had a chance to take the lead in the fifth. Devin Mesoraco led off with a triple to right. But after Kevyn Feiner struck out, Zack Cozart grounded to third and Ahrens threw home to nail Mesoraco. Keltavious Jones followed with a single and Justin Reed walked to load the bases. But Angel Cabrera lined out to right to end the threat.
Dayton starting pitcher Luis Montano pitched very well but was not involved in the decision. He worked six innings, allowing four hits and one earned run with one walk and six strikeouts.
Dragons reliever Terrell Young had a dominant performance. He retired all eight batters he faced including five on strikeouts. Krebs pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing the tie-breaking run to absorb the loss.
The Dragons host the Lugnuts at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the third game of the four game series. Scott Carroll (1-2, 3.14) will start for Dayton.
Notes: Over the first two games of the series, Dragons pitchers have combined to walk just one batter in 20 innings of work while striking out 24.
