Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored a season-high for runs on their way to an 11-6 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday afternoon on Dale & Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Andrew Romine's three-run homer in the sixth inning stopped a Wisconsin comeback attempt in its tracks while Clay Fuller and Angel Castillo each drove in two runs for the Kernels.

In the third inning, the Timber Rattlers (19-22) broke their scoreless inning streak at 20-1/3 innings by scoring a pair of runs. Wisconsin, which had been shutout in two straight games, loaded the bases with no outs on a single and two walks. Juan Diaz flew out to center for a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run. An error on shortstop Romine allowed the second run of the inning to score.

Cedar Rapids (20-24) got one run in the bottom of the third. A sacrifice fly by Fuller pulled the Kernels to within a run.

The Kernels took the lead with a big fourth inning thanks to some Rattler errors and some key base hits. Rattler starter Juan Ramirez hit the leadoff batter and threw wildly on a pickoff throw to move him to second. Efren Navarro singled to right to drive in the tying run. The throw home on the plate sailed to the backstop and allowed Navarro to take third base.

Navarro scored the go ahead run later in the inning as he jarred the ball loose from catcher Blake Ochoa on a play at the plate. Later in the inning, Jerry Gonzalez and Angel Castillo had RBI doubles to knock Ramirez out of the game. Rattler reliever Jake Wild was welcomed to the game with an RBI single by Fuller and the Kernels had a 6-2 lead.

The Rattlers chopped away at that lead with three runs in the top of the sixth off Kernel reliever Ysmael Carmona. Calvin Beamon plated the first run with a sacrifice fly. Then, Denny Almonte crushed a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right for his second homer of the season to pull Wisconsin to within a run.

But, Cedar Rapids got to Wild for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Andrew Romine hit his first homer of the season, a three-run blast to right, with two outs for a 9-5 Kernel lead.

Cedar Rapids added two more runs off Keith Meyer in the bottom of the seventh. An RBI single by Chris Rosebaum was followed by Castillo's second RBI double of the day for an 11-5 advantage.

The Rattlers scored one time in the ninth on an RBI single by Colina, but that was all they could muster as Wisconsin lost their third straight.

Michael Davitt, the starting pitcher, worked five innings and allowed two unearned runs for his second win of the season. He was the first of five pitchers used by the Kernels.

Ramierz, the first of five Rattler pitchers, allowed six runs -- one earned -- and was tagged with his third loss.

The third game of the series is Wednesday night. Edward Paredes (3-3, 5.12) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Trevor Reckling (2-2, 5.58) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:30pm.
