West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - A six run eighth inning stymied a comeback effort by South Bend as the Whitecaps went on to win, 10-4. Paul Nardozzi allowed two hits in five shutout innings to earn his first victory as a starter this season. With a 4-0 lead, Mauricio Robles came on in relief in the sixth and retired the first four batters he faced. But with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Robles walked three hitters in a row. Wilton Garcia then issued two walks in a third of an inning pitched and Rudy Darrow gave up another walk before finishing the inning.

In total, the Whitecaps issued six walks as the Silver Hawks scored three runs in the seventh and left the bases loaded without the benefit of a hit or an error.

Cory Middleton put the Whitecaps on the board with a two-run double in the second. He finished with three RBI as did Ronnie Bourquin, who drove in Kyle Peter on a ground out in the third and doubled home Roger Tomas in the fifth. Following the South Bend rally in the seventh, West Michigan tallied five hits in the eighth, including four consecutive singles by Middleton, Tomas, Peter and Justin Henry. An RBI single by Kody Kaiser and a sacrifice fly by Bourquin gave the ‘Caps a 10-3 lead.

Darrow pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game to earn his third save of the season. He allowed three consecutive hits and a run to start the ninth. Prior to the ninth inning, South Bend had just two hits: One in the second and another in the fourth.

Jarrod Parker, first round draft choice by the Diamondbacks in 2007, took the loss to snap a four start winning streak. He pitched five innings and allowed the first four West Michigan runs on six hits and three walks. The Whitecaps have once again taken over sole possession of first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division, thanks to Lansing's 2-1 win in 11 innings at Dayton.
