Loss Pushes Power under .500

(Columbia, SC)- The West Virginia Power lost 8-2 Saturday night to the Columbia Fireflies. The loss dropped the Power to 30-31 in 2016; the first time the club has been under .500 this season.

Vinny Siena led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a sac fly. It marks the third straight game in the series where Siena led off the home half of the first and scored.

The Fireflies plated two runs in the second against Power starter Dario Agrazal on a home run by Jeff Diehl. Columbia added three runs off Agrazal in the fourth, keyed by a Diehl double, for a 6-0 advantage.

West Virginia broke up the shutout with a run in the top of the fifth. Logan Ratledge singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Mitchell Tolman's second hit of the night brought in Ratledge and the Power trailed 6-1.

Columbia scored twice in the sixth without a base hit. Billy Roth replaced Agrazal and walked the bases loaded. After walking in a run with a fourth straight free pass, Jess Amedee relieved Roth. With one down, the Fireflies eighth and final run crossed on a sacrifice fly.

The Power added a run in the eighth on two hits and a wild pitch.

Gaby Almonte (1-0) earned the win in his 2016 debut, limiting West Virginia to one unearned run over five innings. Agrazal (3-5) took the loss after surrendering six runs on 11 hits over five complete innings.

West Virginia and Columbia conclude this four game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 P.M. Bret Helton will start for the Power and the Fireflies will counter with Kevin Canelon. West Virginia will then travel to Lexington for a three-game set against the Legends starting on Monday night.
