PREVIEW: Delmarva and Lakewood meet in the third game of a four game series this weekend at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. This is Delmarva's last homestand of the first half, and after winning in walk-off fashion on Thursday night, the Shorebirds defense let them down in last night's 6-3 loss. Delmarva's loss, coupled with Hagerstown's win, severely hurt the Shorebirds chance at a Northern Division title - the 'Birds are now five games back of Suns with 10 games left to play. This is the third series between these two teams since May 19th, with Delmarva having a 6-4 edge through the first 10 games. Since the Shorebirds opened the season with a 4-6 mark and lost two of the first three series, they have a series record of 9-3-2 over their last 14 sets, going 29-20 over that stretch.
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Right-hander Jose Taveras gets the ball in the third game of the series. Taveras makes his 12th appearance of the season, but only his seventh start. He opened the year with five dominant bullpen appearances, allowing just three runs in 15.2 frames. Since his transition to the rotation, Taveras is 2-3 with a 4.41 ERA. He started against the Shorebirds two outings back - he earned the win when stifling the Shorebirds over seven innings with just one run and one hit against him. Taveras is a 22-year old pitcher from the Dominican Republic who signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies organization in November, 2013.
LAST GAME QUICK HITS: The Shorebirds scored first in the bottom of the second, but lost 6-3 at home in a sloppy game. Only two of the nine total runs were earned runs. Delmarva committed three errors and allowed two passed balls. Brian Gonzalez took the loss, but his earned run average dropped to 2.33 on the season. Ryan Mountcastle and Gerrion Grim each had multi-hit nights.
