Losing ways return in 4-0 defeat by Swing

May 28, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Just one day after snapping a five game losing streak, the Cedar Rapids Kernels fell to the Swing of the Quad Cities 4-0 Saturday evening to fall to 21-28 on the year. The Swing, winners of two of three against the Kernels during this four game series, improved to 20-26.

The Swing did all its damage in the fifth inning off Kernels starter Robert Mosebach (3-3) after outfielder Chad Gabriel belted a two-run homer, his first of the season, to left with no outs. With two outs, back-to-back singles by Jose Martinez and Daniel Nelson set the table for a two-run double by Swing slugger Randy Roth.

Quad Cities starter Kyle Sadlowski (3-1) was downright unhittable at the onset of the game, retiring the first 14 Kernels he faced before Mark Trumbo snuck a grounder past Luis Cotto at short in the fifth. The only other hit the Kernels managed to muster off Sadlowski was a single by Hainley Statia in the sixth.

Sadlowski went eight innings and struck out four Kernels while walking just one before giving way to Jonathan Mikrut at the onset of the ninth in a non-save situation. Mikrut surrendered a single to Statia but ultimately struck out Jordan Renz to end the game with Statia stranded on second.

The Swing pounded out 11 hits to just 3 by the Kernels.

Tim Mattison and Chris Howell each worked an inning of scoreless relief for the Kernels.

The two teams close out their four game series with a rare Sunday night contest scheduled for 7 p.m. at John O'Donnell Stadium in Davenport. Right-hander Tommy Mendoza (1-5) will look to help the Kernels salvage a series split as he faces Swing right-hander Cory Meacham (3-2).
