Hot day, hotter hitting

Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays dropped their third game in a row to the West Michigan Whitecaps with a score of 12-6. It was a 90 degree day in Battle Creek and the teams put on a show, recording a combined total of 30 hits in the game.

Christian Lopez had his best hitting performance of the season for the Rays. The catcher went 4-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. The only other four hit game of his career came on July 20th 2004 while he was playing rookie ball in Princeton.

Every hitter on the Whitecaps lineup registered a hit. Michael Hernandez also had four hits in the contest.

The Devil Rays held a lead at three separate occasions in the ballgame but the Whitecaps pulled away late with seven runs scored in the seventh and eighth frames. The Rays bullpen continued to struggle against the Caps, especially Chris Kelly who recorded his second loss to West Michigan in three days.

Starter Greg Reinhard is still winless for the season. Reinhard pitched three innings and struck out three while giving up four hits, four walks, and three earned runs. Kevin Lynn, Chris Kelly, and Eddie DeLaCruz combined for six innings pitched and surrendered 14 hits and 9 runs.

The Devil Rays will play a Memorial Day matinee at 3:35 pm against the first place Lansing Lugnuts. It's Munchie Monday at C.O. Brown Stadium and this week's special is $1 burgers. The promotion ends at the completion of the fifth inning so make sure you come early and eat often on Memorial Day. -KV
