Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities scored three runs in the third and nothing more in a 4-3 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels at John O'Donnell Stadium Sunday night in front of a crowd of 4,102. Neither team scored over the final six innings of play, as the Swing and Kernels have split both of their four-game series' this season.

Quad Cities (20-27) tried to rally with three hits over their final two innings, but came up short. Cedar Rapids (22-28) got a strong starting performance form Tommy Mendoza, who posted six 1-2-3 frames in his seven innings of work

Down 4-3, the Swing had their best chance to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Henry Guerrero doubled down the left field line to chase Mendoza from the game, and was replaced by pinch runner Luis Cotto. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third base, but a groundout with the infield in and a strikeout stranded Cotto - who was playing in his 400th career game - 90 feet away from tying the game.

Cedar Rapids started the scoring early with a double by Hainley Statia, the first batter of the game. The Kernels played small ball to bring him home, as a bunt moved him to third and a sacrifice fly gave them a 1-0 lead.

With a 2-0 lead, Cedar Rapids had one on and one out in the top of the third when Mark Trumbo belted his seventh longball of the year beyond the fence in left field. On the season Trumbo is 3-for-21 against the Swing, with two home runs and a single that broke up a perfect game to his credit.

Down 4-0, the Swing cut into the lead in the bottom of the third. Chad Gabriel singled up the middle, and after a stolen base found himself in scoring position with two outs. Daniel Nelson drew a walk and Jose Martinez was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Quad Cities. Colby Rasmus then battled for a big two-out knock, sending a two-strike liner up the middle to drive in a pair. Randy Roth stepped to the plate next, adding an RBI single to bring the Swing to within 4-3.

Mendoza (2-5) sparkled for the Kernels, overcoming the third inning hiccup to strike out seven while allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings. The third inning was the only frame in the first seven in which the 18-year-old flamethrower allowed a baserunner, as he recovered from three two-out runs to retire the next 14 batters he faced. That stretch was snapped by Guerrero's leadoff double in the eighth, the last batter that Mendoza faced.

Cory Meacham (3-3) took the loss despite holding the Kernels to only one hit over his final four innings of work. Four runs early proved to be his undoing, however, as the native of Deatsville, Alabama allowed four runs on six hits in seven frames while striking out a career-high six and walking one.

Ryan Aldridge (9) worked the ninth for his third save against Quad Cities this year. He allowed consecutive single to open the inning, but the rally was nipped in the bud when Roth was caught trying to steal second by catcher Brett Martinez.

UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will head to Beloit for a 4:00 p.m. Memorial Day ballgame with the Snappers, as LHP Adam Daniels (1-4, 5.28) will take the mound against LHP Ryan Mullins (1-2, 4.44). First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., with coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 beginning at 3:45 p.m.
