Burlington Bees News Release

Beloit, WI (May 28, 2006) "" Edward Ovalle's grand slam highlighted a five-run eighth inning that led the Beloit Snappers (24-24) to a 7-2 win over the Burlington Bees (23-24) at Pohlman Field this afternoon. With the win, the Snappers earn a split of this four-game series and the Bees finish this road trip 5-3.

Bees' starter Chris Nicoll and Snappers' starter Brian Duensing entered play today in the top eight in the Midwest League in the ERA race and turned the game into a pitchers' duel for seven innings. The Bees got on the board in the top of the third inning. Jose Duarte led off with a double and with one out Josh Johnson singled to put runners on the corners. Valentino Arce hit a groundball to second and the Snappers got a force out at second base, but couldn't turn two and Duarte scored. The Snappers tied the game on a wind-blown homer by Paul Kelly to leadoff the fourth. The Bees took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning. Jeff Howell led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Johnson. Johnson finished 3-4 in the game. Duensing was done after six innings. Nicoll worked into the seventh and allowed the tying run. With runners on first and second and two outs, Eli Tintor doubled to right-center. Duarte cut the ball off before it got to the wall and started a perfect relay through Johnson at second to cut down Steve Tolleson at the plate for the final out after Dwayne White scored.

Danny Vais replaced Duensing in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings. Gilbert De La Vara replaced Nicoll for the bottom of the eighth. De La Vara issued a leadoff walk to Tarrence Patterson and then tried to get Patterson at second on a bunt by Drew Thompson, but the throw was too late. Kelly followed with another bunt and De La Vara lost his footing coming off the mound to get it and everyone was safe. Kelly was credited with a hit. A walk to Erik Lis forced in the go-ahead run before Ovalle cleared the bases with a blast over the centerfield wall. Ovalle won yesterday's game for Beloit with a two-run walk-off homer in the ninth. After another single by White, Chris Hayes took over for De La Vara on the mound. Tolleson added a single before Hayes got a flyout and a double play to end the inning. Yohan Pino set the Bees down in order in the ninth to finish the game. Vais (2-1) got the win and De La Vara (2-2) the loss. De La Vara hadn't allowed a run in his last 19 innings before today.

The Bees return home to start a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers tomorrow night at Community Field. RH Michael Penn (3-1, 4.15) will start for the Bees against LH Paul Fagan (1-5, 5.48) for Wisconsin. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Memorial Day edition of Dollar Monday sponsored by Miller Lite. General admission tickets, hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, and cans of Pepsi products are all just $1. Cans of Miller products are 2-for-$3 throughout the game.
