Losing Skid Reaches Four Games
July 23, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
For the third straight game, the Goldeyes gave up four early runs, and, for the third straight, they couldn't rally to win.
Held to less than four runs for the first time this road trip, the Goldeyes dropped the series opener against the Kansas City T-Bones 4-2 on Thursday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fall to a 24-34 record, while the T-Bones improve to 32-22 and 10 games ahead of the Goldeyes in the American Association's wild card race.
The T-Bones scored once in the first then put up three runs on five hits in the bottom third to take a 4-0 lead. Neither team scored until the sixth, when Adam Heisler hit a leadoff solo home run over the right field fence to put Winnipeg on the board. Luis Alen then singled Brad Boyer in from second in the bottom seventh, but it wasn't enough.
"When your leadoff guy goes out there and puts the ball out of the park like that, it helps get your guys going," said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. "They just scored more runs than us tonight."
Statistically, they pitched better, too.
Goldeyes starter Nick Hernandez gave up four earned runs on 11 hits through six innings and suffered the loss, while Kansas City starter Kris Regas also pitched six full innings, but allowed only one run on four hits for the win. T-Bones closer Fernando Hernandez gave up two hits, but struck out three in two innings of work to pick up the save.
"He didn't have his best stuff tonight, and you could see that from the get-go, but he's a quality starter," Vermilyea said of Hernandez. "They just found some holes, and they capitalized on it. He pitched his butt off tonight.
"We've just got to keep these guys off balance. A quality start is all we're asking for. We've been scoring runs lately, so as long as we keep out guys in the game, they'll score runs for us."
Right-hander Matt Jackson will look to give the Goldeyes a quality start when he takes the mound Friday night at 7 p.m. in the second game of the series.
The Goldeyes return home on Wednesday, July 29 for the first of a three-game series at 7 p.m. against the Amarillo ThunderHeads.
