Sioux City Explorers News Release
The Sioux City Explorers win their fortieth game of the season in walk off fashion, sweeping the Saltdogs with the 9-8 win in eleven innings.
Lincoln scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Eddie Young singled with two outs, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored off an RBI double by Curt Smith to give the Saltdogs the 1-0 lead after three.
The Saltdogs tacked on one more in the fifth but Sioux City answered in the bottom half, plating five big runs on four hits. X's right-fielder Michael Lang tied it 2-2 off a two run single to start the runs for the Explorers. Rene Tosoni extended the lead by two more runs with a two run triple, and then Brock Kjeldgaard would score Tosoni from third off a 3-1 groundout.
In the sixth, an RBI double by Saltdog Matt Forgatch cut the lead to one, but the X's matched it plating a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Newly acquired outfielder for Sioux City Brent Keys, scored the run in the sixth off an error by the right-fielder.
The Saltdogs and Explorers both scored one more run each in the seventh and eighth innings to make it 7-5 after eight. In the ninth, Lincoln retook the lead. Curt Smith hit a solo home run for the first run of the inning when Steve Tinoco had an RBI single to tie it, and then an Aaron Payne RBI (4-3) groundout scored a man from third to give Lincoln the 8-7 lead.
Sioux City tied it in the bottom of the ninth off a Noah Perio sac-fly RBI that scored Tosoni to send it into extra innings at 8-8.
In the eleventh, Matty Johnson started the inning at second base and later moved to third on a sac-bunt by Michael Lang to put the X's 90 feet away from victory. Rene Tosoni was intentionally walked to put runners at the corners, and then a walk-off RBI single by Ino Patron wins it for Sioux City 9-8 in eleven innings.
Rob Wort (4-2) was the winning pitcher for Sioux City, pitching in innings ten and eleven, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts. Mackenzie King (1-3) was charged with the loss for Lincoln, allowing the walk off base hit by Ino Patron that scored Johnson.
The Explorers will head to Gary, Indiana to take on the Railcats in a three game set (July 23-27th). For additional information, please call 712-277-WINS (9467) or email promotions@xsbaseball.com.
