AMARILLO, Texas - The Sioux Falls (24-35) offense was clicking on all cylinders on Thursday evening. A plethora of runs and a solid outing by starter Tyler Pearson (3-2, 4.92 ERA) proved to be the difference as the Birds' defeated the Amarillo Thunderheads (27-32) by a final of 11-7 at Potter County Memorial Stadium.

The Canaries picked up seven runs in the first four innings in game one on Thursday. In the top of the first, Brian Humphries picked up an RBI single to put the first run on the board for the Canaries. In the second, Michael Broad hit into a ground-out, but not before Jason Repko was able to score from third.

Leading things off in the third, Jerome Pena hit a towering solo homerun over the left field wall. Repko followed with an RBI single of his own, allowing Humphries to score. The fourth inning was a large part of the Canaries offense in the evening matchup. David Bergin got things started with a two-run homerun into deep center field. Repko finished things off with another RBI single.

Amarillo was able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the day short for starter Tyler Pearson. Pearson tossed 6 2/3 innings on five hits and allowing five earned runs, picking up his third win for Sioux Falls. Righty Will Rankin subbed for Pearson, but allowed a bases clearing double to Juan Martinez to push the score to 7-5.

In the top of the eighth, RJ Perucki hit an RBI single to pick up an insurance run for Sioux Falls. The Canaries called upon eighth inning man Cameron McVey to the mound as he threw a scoreless 1-2-3 inning in the eighth and gave up two runs in the ninth.

Every Sioux Falls batter picked up at least one hit on Thursday evening. The Canaries power-hitting first baseman David Bergin was just a double short of the cycle. Bergin went 4-for-6 with a triple, a homerun, three RBI and scored two runs. The Birds' shortstop Jerome Pena also paced the Canaries offense going 4-for-6 with 2 RBI. In all, the Canaries picked up eleven runs on 21 hits, committing only two errors in the field.

The Canaries will go for win two on Friday evening as they send Shawn Blackwell (1-7, 4.06 ERA) to the mound in search of his third win in a Sioux Falls uniform. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM for game two of a four game series.
