Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - After five innings of play, the tarp was put on the field. Forty-two minutes later, the game was called with the Loons ahead 5-2, giving them the win Saturday night over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Minor League Baseball's rule is that as long as the game goes for a full five innings, which it did, the outing counts as an official game.

The Kernels scored first on two extra-base hits in the first inning, but the Loons answered in the bottom of the inning with a double by Christian Lara followed by Angelo Songco's RBI-single to make it 1-1.

Cedar Rapids manufactured another run in the fourth inning with three singles to lead-off the inning. Again, the Loons answered the call, as Jaime Ortiz launched his fourth home run of the season over the right field wall. Later in the inning, Rafael Ynoa hit a double to right field and scored on a single by Lara to give the Loons the lead.

The Loons extended their lead in the following inning, with a pair of lead-off hits. Brian Cavazos-Galvez stole for second base, causing the Kernels starting pitcher Garrett Richards to make a play to at second, but overthrew second baseman Jean Segura. The throwing error allowed Galvez to reach third and sent Songco home to score. A single from Brian Ruggiano later in the inning gave the Loons their final run.

Great Lakes' offense totaled 11 hits in the abbreviated game, with four players turning in two-hit performances.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Magill (2-0, 3.14) threw for the first complete game of his career, a five-inning outing where he allowed two runs on five hits. Magill, who fanned two and walked none, was assisted by a familiar friend: the rain.

"I don't know, it's just every time I'm pitching it rains," Magill said after the game. "People in the clubhouse are calling me the ‘Rain Man' now. It's worked out so far. It's keeping my pitch-count down and last week it helped me out by canceling the game, and tonight letting me get the win."

Prior to tonight's outing, two of Magill's scheduled starts at Dow Diamond had to be rescheduled due to rain. In his last attempt at a start, he had allowed nine runs in four innings before the rain saved him by canceling the game, which in turn erased those stats.

Cedar Rapids' Richards finished with a complete game as well, but was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits.

The Loons play the final game of their three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels Sunday at Dow Diamond. RHP Will Savage (5-1, 2.26) will start for the Loons, while RHP Fabio Martinez (3-1, 3.81) will pitch for the Kernels. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Gates open at noon for the Loons Pre-game Youth Clinic, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. ‘Birdzerk!' the national entertainer will perform during the game. After the game, Kids Run the Bases.

The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
