South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - One night after winning in exhilarating fashion with a walk off homer, the South Bend Silver Hawks won more comfortably Saturday night against Burlington. The Silver Hawks defeated the Bees 12-1 at Coveleski Stadium in their largest offensive output and margin of victory on the season.
South Bend jumped on Burlington starter Nick Wooley (LP, 2-4) with seven runs in the third inning. Tyson Van Winkle, Andrew Fie, and Keon Broxton all reached to start the inning and load the bases. After Chris Owings struck out, Bobby Borchering delivered a two RBI double to put the Silver Hawks up 2-0. Matt Davidson did the same to increase the lead to 4-0 and later scored on an RBI double by Alberto Diaz. Matt Helm doubled home Diaz and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Silver Hawks their most runs in one inning this season.
The Silver Hawks continued the offensive onslaught with four more funs in the fourth inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Owings and Borchering scored on a single by Diaz and throwing error by Burlington third baseman Fernando Cruz. Diaz and Nick crossed the plate after another double from Helm to put South Bend on top 11-1.
That was more than enough run support for South Bend starter Brad Gemberling (WP, 1-3). Despite a low 2.89 ERA entering the contest, Gemberling had been victimized by a lack of run support and was 0-3. He threw 7.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing only two hits while striking out three and walking three to earn his first victory in a South Bend uniform. Rafael Quezada (ND) pitched a scoreless eighth while Adam Worthington (ND) tossed a perfect ninth in his South Bend debut.
South Bend added another run in the eighth on a Helm RBI single. Helm collected four RBIs on the evening, tying the team high previously set by Matt Davidson twice this season. Alberto Diaz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
The Silver Hawks conclude their nine-game home stand and three-game series against the Burlington Bees (Kansas City Royals) on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM. LHP Mike Belfiore (1-4, 3.04 ERA) will pitch for South Bend while Burlington sends RHP Matt Mitchell to the mound (1-5, 5.73 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
